Sometimes I wonder why the one getting stabbed would pull people into his/her arms.... Wouldn't you guys be shish kebab-ed?? And if there's fire, you guys would be grilled, literally

@NrBloopy For the stabbed situation. I can only assume that they realized he's going to stab brielle last second, so there isn't much time to react differently. On top of that it doesn't looks like the knife is long enough to stab through both Marie and Brielle like a kabob either. With that in mind, the best course of action would be to pull the target in as close as possible to act as a human shield, that way it makes it harder for the murderer to stab their target without taking the time to move around and locate a spot to stab before getting caught by others.
At least, that's how I see it. There could be other reasons why people do it that is outside of plot reasons.
