It is pretty much the norm in any sense like what we have over here. The quote from "IF you can't beat them, join them" comes to mind when in this situation. The term we use the most is Join or perish with the old is quite used in many sense like with company mergers to compete with other stronger companies. Or a corporate takeover. In battle, it would be like during WW2, when Germans took France, they were joined temporarily as a way to survive rather than facing total annihilation.
