He gave it up so he wouldn't put his family into danger as they're already dealing with bad luck from the "Prophecy" and the fact they're poor and are disrespected from the nobles
They gave it up to have a new title, more adequate jobs and the emperor trust.
So even tho it'll take time to get money, they'll surely get it and as they get it they'll also be strong and will not be attacked.
