@Cheeseburger he can, if I remember correctly he can talk to the spirit as long as he's holding a sword it can be any sword 
@Cheeseburger Anything as long as it's a stick, wood, steel, ...
@Cheeseburger it said in one of the chapters the MC can talk to him now without the sword because their worlds are intertwined or something like that
