@Janice She is not stupid. Yes she's thinking of how he was in the novel but remember that she's actually LIVING it and that he threatened her right when they got married. He made her understand several times that he was gonna kill her out of boredom so she had to put on a mask just to keep him entertained. She wasn't being herself and had to constantly walk on eggs. You can't live that way, nobody can live that way. That's way too much for one's mental health.
