I think her stepmother did think she was cute but didn't want to take her birth mothers place calling her cute. You can tell the stepmother really loves her and is trying to help her find the right things which i truly appreciate. Sure our mc is having problems with her own self esteem but i think our ml will make up for that but that doesn't mean im defending against her getting low self esteem from her step mother.

@Sweet Noodle I read ahead as this story only has 22 chapters and is finished... Stepmother does love her and is sorry for it but it's never explained why she gaslit her with this ugly sh**. I guess it's up to the readers inerpretation as bullshit as that is. I'd put a spoiler but is that really a spoiler? It's never explained!

@Nissin that would just create the polar opposite effect though, the first guy that comes along and fawns over her beauty would have complete loyal control over her. That happens all the time IRL, abusive parents create dependant people on the first person to show them safety and kindness.
