@Naomerz her mother was the one who never let her out and do as she pleased. And likely by the time she first began feeling guilty, she was already very unlearned of the world and didn't have any way to be useful, and was in so deep she didn't know how to get out of it. What's happening right now IS her chance to learn to be useful, and she's not whining or complaining, but trying and working as hard as she can to improve herself.
