Sounds like a good idea considering his karate skill.
Maybe he could get black steel sharp knuckles thing(I dont know the name).
Like CT3421 said, get black steel sharp knuckles (brass knuckles) or a type of glove the completely protects the hand and can be use for offensive and devisnsive
