It's just like what you said. It went for 7 years, you can't just get rid of a love for a 7 yeats relationship. The pain also only started afew months before the accident since one of the flashbacks contains a year ago memory where they do the deed lovingly without that much issues other than some of ml's bratty attitude from once and awhile
