The MC is in highschool, and the kids dad just stated the MC has been in the military, but the kid doesn't think to ask how is that possible?

It's called common sense boy. If your dad, a former member of the military is saying someone he just sparred with and casually laughing with afterwards is part of military as well, you don't question it, especially when you've seen said person in action. I swear, when characters question it, that's weird. When they don't, that's also weird..... SMH
i would ask a little i mean like how didi he join the military so young and leave aswell like hes your age it dosnt make alot of sense
