@Jinx I think he knows to some extent but maybe he has a different interpretation of likes. He maybe would be surprised as he could not imagine the secretary would like someone like him.

I had this guy in my class who liked me for 4 years, was my good friend, but never told me because he doesn't like to get rejected. I find him as a good person but don't have feelings for my friend and also I find that behaviour of his a little cowardly. 
I don't know why I am sharing this with you here but I found the story a little bit similar.
