Could've said cancerous brain tumors, or early onset parkinsons, but noooo. It's some imaginary sensory disease.
4th Wave is Schrödinger's Feminism. A woman is simultaneously empowered and oppressed. Her status is determined by which one she percieves as advantageous in any given situation.

@PurrpiTator but this made up disease makes it clear as to why she loves perfumery so much, why she's so touched at being able to smell things. it's a simple, everyday experience for the rest of us, but for her it marked the beginning of her inevitable death. She slowly lost the things that made life worth living, so being able to smell again makes this new life so much more worthwhile, since it was the first sense she was deprived of. the made up disease adds more emotion and tragedy to her character.
