@dafreak is this From what I understood, there's a huge gap within historical events, what the Shadow referred to as being a void. Basically, a huge chunk of history is missing and no one knows why. Imagine our own History and about 300 years of it go missing without a trace. You won't notice because you never thought about it, but as an outsider, Shane questioned it and apparently has been for some time, but couldn't put his finger on it.
The gap between the last era where the heroes were alive, known as the Era of Twilight, and the current era where Shane is, known as the Era of Darkness, that is that void. According to the books, the two eras are separated by centuries, yet there are no records from that time period. Where did that History go? Why did the realms from where the heroes hailed disappear? Even the current age is set in a format that makes no sense; almost as if people are living in a bubble. When Shane asked Celette what the current kingdom was, he couldn't answer... because there is no answer.
In other words: History was either erased, including the memory of it or it just plain never existed and the world was completely altered.
As I mentioned in a previous comment, it's very well possible that this is some form of computer simulation that somehow gained a consciousness and it all went horribly wrong.

@AshiuRey thanks for the explaination, History stuff dont usually stick in my brain for long and I also was half asleep to understand this chapter's plot
@dafreak is this Ah don't worry, when Meltier had his meltdown, I went back up and reread the thing two or three times to get the gist myself. I'm seriously loving where the plot is going, I just hope it won't lose itself like so many others did
