Its also a good example of how fuc*** up poverty is. Never ending cycle that just gets worse and worse until there's a chance it'll get better. And sometimes there's no chance at all
I also think that it's not really the point of the story, that he has to take care of himself. He has to take care of himself and another person, and that person is valuable to him and also hella expensive
