Finally, Annette got her divorce, but she is not in the mental state to realize that she is free from Heiner
Heiner is projecting all of his resolve (both love and hate) on Annette, just because she had a good childhood. Like, instead of just hating her father, the culprits of his bad training, he blames Annette, who didn't know a thing, who probably would have tried to help since she is a good person. Afterall, her only sin was to not knowing what was really happening in the world.
And all of his speech about Annette dieing being related to Annette leaving him forever? He is right in thinking that HE is the one who needs help from an asylum.
Hopefully the flashback is more to let us learn about his past and less about making us sympathetic towards him.
Just because he got trauma, doesn't mean he has an excuse for his horrible treatment of Annette.
