Although more seriously, the "praying" sounds similar to "I'm just randomly talking while coding this assignment/doing this experiment" and "Oh, you were there, I didn't see you" ways of gossiping/spreading news.
An even older version comes up in the folktale of The Goose-girl, when the king realizes something funny is going on with the main character. She explains that she vowed to never tell any living being (nvm it was a promise made under threats), so the king tells her to confide in the iron stove in the room. Of course, he's eavesdropping. The villain has a particularly gruesome death.
