People in the comments still hate a lot on the emperor but I see him as more pitiful than the empress, she at least had the illusion of love and care whereas he never even got that much. He was raised to be the perfect healbot, experimented on by a whackjob, and had not a single ally he could trust whereas again Lass/Ras/FL at least had her loyal hound in Sing, wasn't a medical experiment, and was at least allowed to be a normal if overstressed and overworked girl at least until they threw her onto the battlefield. Really it's kind of a miracle that the dude is as well adjusted as he is, as being cold to everyone and leaning a bit too hard into Real Politic are not the worst reactions a ruler in his position could have.

@Irateastartes you know it's fked up when you can say at least Ras got to live vicariously through people she believed loved her back.
But I agree, of course ML is how he is, his "role models" were psychos and people who bullied or resented him. He has difficulty identifying his feelings of love and affection and he only expresses his approval and appreciation through maniacal laughter and stereotypical, yet awkward, courting maneuvers. All of his flashbacks paint a messed up picture. The one in ch 39 is pretty bad, where he's doubled over on the ground after healing and then his dad pulls him back up by the back of his shirt collar. The flashback this chapter is different because we see he felt something new, aside from the previous fear and pained exhaustion: anger lmao.

@Irateastartes I'm sorry but hold on, you don't have to compare them. Both of them are victims and clearly hurt. Don't say that she "at least had the illusion of love and care" as if it's any better, because it's not. That's why she's so sad, feel betrayed and abandoned—resulting to her deep hatred and want to have a revenge. And to be clear, she also got experimented by feeding her poision (only that she blindly accepted it), was kept in the dark for years, used her identity to be the villain, and was sent to war to die there and to take responsibility for her family's greediness. I don't hate the emperor, but he's honestly pis**** me off sometimes.
