@Omniscient Reader Depends on the family.

My mother wanted more, but after my younger sibling was born, she was told a third pregnancy would kill her. (She needed blood transfusions both times. And was in line fast to get tested for HIV once that news broke.)

My maternal grandmother was very very Catholic, seriously old school Catholic. The kind of Catholic where popping out babies is something you just do. Mother was one of eight, and the youngest had some developmental problems due to being born so late in her mother's life. (Fortunately aunt had slower development, not arrested development.) Unfortunately, various old-fashioned religions still have that mindset.

Some patriarchal type families will keep going until that all-important boy is born. And so on.

It's weird how religion, during the propagation and expansion times, always take into account the current existing local culture, situation, and condition of the people and place, however, nowadays lots of people just follow religion blindly eventho the old teachings may not be apt for the current times.
