TJ destroyed Ian's career. He sent those gangsters there to stop him from achieving his dreams. He wanted him stuck in the gang to rot in there with him. And as the other commenter said, brutally killed is a wild take. It was self defense, the guy was literally trying to kill him, it was kill or be killed. And lastly "necessary to keep ian close" BINGO!!! You hit the nail on the head and then completely missed the entire point of TJ's monologue in this chapter. TJ has been holding Ian back every step of the way. Ian has moved on from the past while TJ refused and dragged him back. TJ has quite literally destroyed anything Ian could have achieved and kept him stuck with him
