@sugar plum Based on what they said, Saul took the power of winter from Hale fearing the potential for it to go astray (unclear why he thought that way), but couldn't control the side effects, so he left to avoid hurting Hale (but was an idiot to not explain beforehand). The power was killing him, so he came back to say goodbye. Between the romance plot, Saul realized that the problem was taking a power not meant for him, so he returned it to Hale, who the power always belonged to and can withstand it without sideffects, thus allowing them to have their happily ever after.
