@Tsering Lhamo It could just be me (considering I have also never dated somoene before), but I feel like he is communicating well by admitting to the initial bet as well as mentioning that he's serious about her now. I also think he made a smart decision by letting her go upstairs when she said she would because in my opinion, trying to stop her from doing that would escalate the conflict poorly.
What he can do from now on (that I think would be effective for him) is give her the space she needs while also proving with his actions that he's serious about her from here on out.
