No he was human, and if I remember the flashbacks a few chapters ago, he wasn't that high up in skill, maybe a high-level knight but not a hero. And his lover was killed, assuming by beast-men.
My other assumption is he made a deal with Devourer to server him as a lich after his revenge was done which may have given him some powers?
@Ulric Holden I thought we only saw part of his reflection in the sword
