Colton removed Damon from the upcoming exhibit that Della is part of, with plans to give Damon his own solo exhibit in the future. However, he hasn't actually told Damon any of this yet. So from Damon's perspective, Colton wasn't all that serious about his feelings for him and simply removed Damon from the exhibit without a word. As a result, Damon is pulling back from Colton to protect his own feelings.
If I remember correctly, the whole point of their entire s** partnership originally was that Damon wanted to be in the exhibit (where his ex would be), and he guessed that Colton has BDSM bedroom habits that he was ashamed of (due to childhood trauma and how his father behaves).
