Ok heart... get ready for the drama.

total side rant: I really hate the "squid" thing in manhwa. It dehumanizes people who might not be considered conventionally attractive, as if that's inferior. You can't control your genes, and an unattractive person can still be a good person worthy of love. Iunno, I know it's just a manhwa but it drives me a bit batty when I see the squid drawn on someone to be like "haha they're so ugly". Like stfu maybe he's hilarious and respectful and charming, fun to be around. We can't all be models. Yeesh.

@Venaldre and the thing is most of the time authors of these are like squids themselves acc to their standards

It's cuz not only beauty standards, but what most people (not everyone), but from all my experience I've come to conclude.. want main characters as "good looking, hot people". And then people begin excusing the behavior because he's hot.

So it attracts those with beauty standards and even the people who make it have beauty standards and what they consider "beauty".
It's a never ending dumb a cycle.

To attract people into reading stuff --> Make story less engaging; but the characters typical "tall, tiny waist etc" stuff --> People come to read for it more than the story itself. Half of manhwas have no plot and are stupid tbh
I hate those stupid unrealistic stories where the bully victim is [overweight, has pimples, etc] and says " no one wants me" and then randomly 45 chapters later changes complete physique, has no pimples nor chubby faces, is muscular or skinny and is then considered "hot" and is why that character SUDDENLY attracts people around them (the NPC characters always mention "omg you're so hot now!" (??)

It is same mentality as plot of manhwas/stories; Lots of people are driven to toxic/abusive ones where abuse is romanticized and glorified -- and they keep producing it because it gains attraction and attention. Meanwhile, good plots with actual amazing storylines are not famous nor known, and in the "forgotten pile".
It's supply and demand basically lol.
Supply (art, character illustrations and how they look), Demand ("hot" according to beauty standards characters)
@veralol I won't sit here and say I don't love my hot characters. I'm not against the leads being attractive, I'm just against shaming characters for not being as much so. As if to say because the main characters are hot, they are somehow superior. It's toxic.

and yeah the amount of stories where the FL is like "well at least he's hot/rich" like what? That doesn't excuse bad behavior, and yet the reality is we do let it slide. People gonna people, doesn't mean we shouldn't strive to be better. They need to read Cursed Princess Club.

da** now I think I'm gonna reread that. : )

👍

I get it, I was looking at the mechanism I found from reading tons of manhwas. They always have same stereotypes ¯\(ツ)/¯

I also don't get why the other characters can't be as attractive as the main ones and are portrayed as "unattractive" or have a very different design from the main characters.

And meh, yes, most people let slide a ton of things so it isn't new at all nor anything surprising.
I guess attraction is subjective? I have 0 attraction so I don't know personally.

@veralol they really do have the same stereotypes. It gets a little boring.

Even some manhwa that are like, there's one where the FL gets "ugly" blotches in her skin and I'm like, dude she still ain't "ugly". Or like you said earlier the lame ones where it's like the character starts off as heavier is the usual "unattractive" easy grab for manhwa artists and they get thin to get hot and it's like, nah. Please don't foot stomp those standards, artists

@F.B.I. Tokyo

They aren't overthinking at all.
If you don't like a text that critics something in like almost every manhwa; then simply don't read it at all.

@veralol wasn't even gonna respond to them, but thank you, perfectly stated! <3

sorry I use my brain and analyze what I read. /shrug
i choose to engage in my reading this way and although a person never has to agree, I don't think they need to dismiss other readers, or make them feel smaller. They choose how to engage, and maybe next time, they'll make it kindness or at least add to the discussion in a shared space instead of negativity. : )
