Not sure about how much time has passed, since the training time wasn't that pronounced. But it seems like a race against time situation. The enemies are coming to MC, and he can't take his sweet time to get more powerful. There is no points system in this manga, so MC can't put some points into a skill and upgrade it. Its more natural system, where he has to both practice and experiment
This is what makes this story different, though we as reader are able to imagine all the various applications for his space magic, the MC himself is new to space magic, cut of from learning resources, barely any helpers he can trust, improvising/experimenting in a dangerous environment.
