It was about time we got some background story into Victor and Diah's relationship, especially his side of things. I've always considered him to be well-written, but I needed something more to back this up, and this chapter was it.
I've been curious why he was so obsessed with Diah, so forceful and violent. Was it just to get back at Eiser, or had something happened between him and Diah we hadn't yet seen that made him so bitter and cruel? Or had he always been such a bad person, even as a kid, and only ever needed Diah for his (well, his disgusting father's) future plans with the family?
But the real story as he experienced it is just so sad. She was the only thing evoking some sense of humanity in him, the only ember of light in the utter darkness his horrible father turned his life into, yet it wasn't enough. He wasn't born evil but his father made sure he was made the villain from so early on, no amount of emotions he harbored for Diah could fix that. And it was particularly heartbreaking how Diah wasn't just a means to an end for the family plans, but rather everything else he did was so he can ensure she remained in his future. Because he really wanted her albeit in his own (self-)destructive, dark, and progressively toxic way. And then everything happened... For the first time ever, I felt truly sorry for him. His actions are of course still inexcusable. No matter how hard life gets or how you were raised, you always have a choice, just like the rest. It's just more difficult to make the right choice, with a history like Victor's. So he should still face every bit of the consequences for his wrongs, but in all fairness to a great extent, it wasn't all on him, especially at first. No kid should be raised to think that evil, destruction and violence is the only way to be. His father truly failed him and I hope he, before anyone else, meet his very much appropriate demise.
The romantic in me wishes for Victor to be redeemed eventually, and for his relationship with both Eiser and Diah to be fixed, but I don't know if this is possible at this point. Some stories just don't have a happy ending...
But I do hope Eiser and Serena's does 🥹🙏🏻
