The grandmother is not dead, she's dying and wants to see the ocean one last time, so Dan is taking her to the ocean. He also got pamphlets and information on Hospice care which means there is nothing else medicine can do for her, and he just needs to make her comfortable. He's going to spend his grandmother's final days with her by the ocean.
