He sets the room on fire, he is able to escape but in the fire his friend dies (Carl) and I think George. One of them is badly disfigured, Simon and Jerome don't die. He sees a news report thinking they are all dead. Lives his life but ends up getting caught by them and is assaulted repeatedly by them and a group of men. He finally escaped that and finds one of their prior victims. I stopped reading up to this point
