Even if he held the wooden stick as if it was a sword, it would be entirely different from a sword.
Due to the difference in weight distribution the balance point of a sword would be closer to the pommel. This effects the way you swing and hold it.
You would need to add something to the wooden stick to equalize it. (Rope for example)
I think that voice in his head should say that.

Or something about hand grip. He holds the wooden stick with two hands, while the sword image shows a one-handed sword, it shows that it doesn't have a grip big enough for two hands.
Besides that, the wooden stick he uses is too small to be a reimagined as a two-handed sword. 

For information, I'm no expert. I just have a slight interest in swords. But these things seem pretty logical to me, if you just think about it for a second.
