@McCafferty Wa** is originally a British slang term for masturbation. A wan*** is someone who masturbates; loosely, a selfish pr***. In fandom, wa**--particularly fanwank--refers to anything that gives pleasure only to the wa**'s perpetrator and nobody else, such as horrible fanfic or stupid arguments about concepts in fandom.
