Ch. 169
Ok, I get that he has issues and fear of abandonment, but placing that level of a burden on her shoulders is just low, especially for someone like him.

I'd like to think it's the alcohol talking, but still. You don't emotionally blackmail someone who is trying to build themselves up, trying to protect everything they have and are, and is actively working for a better future. She waited 3 years in that Campaign where you left the first night without a word. You left her alone a lot of nights while looking for monsters. You left her alone for the Capital Ceremony. You left her alone when going to the Monster War. You almost left her alone in that horrible prison of a life. You have no real grounds to put that emotional baggage on her.

One can say it was because of duty. Well, her decision is out of duty as well. Not just to herself, but the people of Anatol whom she learned to love. She wants to protect them by ensuring their lord remains in place and the Duke leaves them alone.

Maxi realized something very important: if they continue on this path, they will end up destroying and resenting each other.
Strawberries are neither classified as a berry nor do they come from straws. They are liars and false to the core. Do not trust the strawberry.

@bubooboe No, you read it right, the Duke made a deal with Riftan so he would take the Duke's place in the Dragon Campaign and in exchange, he would offer Maxi's hand in marriage.
However, soon after their wedding night, Riftan up and left for the campaign without a word and left Maxi at Croyso Castle. Sure he sent envoys to collect her, but they were all turned down and Riftan believed it was Maxi who turned them away, not the Duke. In other words, even though it was without knowledge, he still left her there, alone, for three years, letting her marinate in her thoughts.
