Tips to writers, don't make your last boss an amorphous blob, cloud, vague evil thing. Takes half the emotion out of the fight and you are just like, well they beat that thing. Good thing they overcame the thing. Doesn't sound as good as overcoming the one who killed millions of your kind, and tried to eat your heart, but you know he felt regret and wasn't so bad after all summoning people from other worlds to murder you so he's fine now he died fighting the thing. You know the thing that's ugly that eats worlds that came from a last minute plot device instead of what the whole story was building up to. One of my favorite stories and it went the Green Lantern movie ending route.
Just picture Vel fighting the king while of course the mage stood between them, which I would not have been ok with. Hopefully our mage quickly realized she was siding against the woman she loved by stopping her from finishing off the king, and finding the king irredeemable. Thus the princess had to realize her own father was in the wrong all this time when Vel only wanted peace and all the king wanted was to kill her to live longer. Then as he was laying there and his life passing away he would finally apologize and hope his daughter could find peace with the demons.
