@Raios Right. The reason kids went to school to get knowledge was in times and eras where things like libraries were restricted or not a thing, and they needed the knowledge to claw their way up in the world. When public libraries are a thing, and especially with the internet, it's much more fun seeking out knowledge on your own then regurgitating the dry material from textbooks.
(Nvm that often textbooks are erroneous or biased. Public access material is too, but you can look for the facts instead of being required to treat them as gospel truth for the sake of tests.)
Schools have their uses, when they actually teach rather than passing kids on or replacing learning with rote memorization*, and in Erenguard's (sp?) case part of it seems to be knowing who can use magic sufficiently to cause havoc.
*Part of this is the problem with how funding is determined for schools.
