He didnt abandon her he just feels so worthless not being able to protect her or being able to be there for her as a father so he cant look her in the eyes or do anything because he feels he failed as a father

Yeah, my thoughts as well. And he might have also thought that keeping it a secret and to just silently watch over her as she grows up would suffice, however, as we can see...it didn't work 🤦♂️
