functions of cornea in the eye can be protecting the structures inside the eye and and focusing light rays on the retina with minimum scatter and optical degradation. Meaning if he was to scratch his cornea, he could become short sighted because the lights rays can not focus on the retina properly (because the cornea curves too steeply)
