he was under mind control only after the yevonne came to the mansion
before there was no brainwashing . stilll he treated Penolpe badly. saying it is for the family and mistreating penolpe is not acceptable at all . Furthermore, unlike the 2nd brother, he never even apologized
the cage bird part is the worst one though. he gifted it symbolizing wanting to trap penolpe like that bird
so you can't just say he was under mind control and excuse him
