Some people in the comment section really screams ignorance and doesn't obviously know how to look at it through the lens of a mother. She's a mother for the sakes of life! How could she even afford to even consider accepting her daughter's wish in exchange for her happiness? How could she even think for a moment of sacrificing her own daughter's life for the benefit of her future? Well guess what? She can't! Even if her daughter said that she doesn't really care about her own life anymore, the fl can't accept that mindlessly because she's a mother. She's a mother that spent her life raising and cherishing that very kid. 

That subject aside, she only approached the duke to ATLEAST try to consider her daughter's wish in a little way without actually expecting for him to like her in the process because the duke was known to be a stoic and cold person that doesn't even give a glance towards women.
