@Smack my a** hmmmm idk bro, maybe because SPEED is a very limiting power?? All you can really do is emchance your physical combat through like, the speed I forgot the word, so he has like, maybe 3 moves............ Which he uses.. and the point is that he refines them?? Like if you wanna see smth where there's different forms of attack find something where's the MC's ability isn't limited to a physical constraint such as speed .. like w telekinesis u get a shitton of moves, same w ice or fire , but like making yourself buff or faster is just.. making yourself buffer or faster ! Not much you can do w it

@Smack my a** the fight I believe was used as an anchor to put Arthur not only in a position where he needs to display his affection (which has previously been avoided) by making a small sacrifice (plot armour so it's small to readers but relevant to her)  and also to show more about tessia, in this case her abilities and beast will, it was a good play on writing
