Not presenting a theory as I am not scientist but a simple thought that's more real than life itself which might give you a real good view of that girl's perspective.
So at some point in life you start to feel alienated from others and when I mean others I also mean the ones who have been close to you since forever but at that time you start to wonder and think about things that hurt you and that's all that's in your mind in this state the kindness shown to you will feel like pity and it will feel humiliating.
Many people in real life and most from our generation go from this state for such development you don't need no skin disease you just need to have a realisation that the world is indeed of and for fools.
The overwhelming feelings start poring in it could be triggered by various reasons such as love, friendship, poor parenting or some disease but that realisation develops ones character in a way nothing can.
Even right now she has suffered so much that she must have given up on treating her illness but it's not that she accepted it but right now she hates it more than ever.
But we will see if she will take MC's hand for recovering.
That is similar to you can accept the sufferings you are feeling now or the pain of growing.
So in the end it's in your hands
