To be perfectly frank, the events you describe here aren't any better...Quite the opposite, even. Only the fact killeon is the one to execute her, has some appeal. But how he magically changes course all of a sudden is just sloppy AF. Last minute resolution while going for the slash? Nah, why not have g** himself descend from the sky while you're at it? And from previous comments on previous chapters pointing out the differences with the novels, I guess his behaviour in the novel is pretty much always flickery like that. At least in this adaption his behaviour is coherent.

Also..The fact she accepted and wished for death only after torture, as if to put an end to the actual suffering, is also lame. (gore for the sake of it doesn't make a story good.) She just chooses to runaway, like any weakminded person would in such circumstances. Here, the psychology leading her to 'coldly' come to this conclusion, not only is more badass, it is also more meaningful in the sense she wasn't just beated up half dead on repeat until her mind broke, this is a decision and resolve. The only black spot in this aspect of the story is the fact she never worded it out clearly, it just got offscreened even from herself. It would've been a better scene to see her get on her knees there and proclaiming she accepts death. (maybe even better with some cool phrasing about honor of something) The shock value, the reaction from the audience including the duke himself.. That could have been a tactful turning point for her being spared instead of this nonsense from the tomboyish princess.

@TotallyAbsurd yes Killian was flippant from the beginning. But that's because every time he swayed the author would exert more pressure on him to stay in plot so he was being mind controlled.  The rest of the chapters are similar/same as in novel except for a few skipped chapters that does not really affect the story much.
But Killian being the one to stop execution had a better affect. And no, he did not change is mind mid action of swinging his sword, as you can see he was desperately searching for her. And he took the role of executioner to prevent the actual murder from happening in the novel. As told earlier, no one at that execution ground was on Ediths side. Reeze was he** bent on having her slayed. So if it wasn't for Killian taking the stand she would have really died then and there marked as a traitor.

And she wasn't half beaten to submit to her demise even in novel. She had made all the plans to run off. But she took good 3-5 days to think things through before returning to the dukedom. If the plot was strong and she had no other place left to run off to what can a person do? She's been fighting against plots after plots and there's always a limit on how much a person can tolerate. So if her ending was to die as a villainess anyway, she chose that to happen at the hands of the character she genuinely fell in love with.
