@Unslaadahsil 11 months late, but none of the bridge stuff matters 🤣 Galactic is correct. When you are trying to push enemies into a moat, it's better to have an angle than a sheer cliff because the cliff face makes it easier to avoid. Think of it like a boulder rolling down hill instead of pushing it off a sheer cliff. If the ENTIRE pool was filled to the brim, it would be better to make it a pit, but it's easier to both fill and bridge a square shape than a sloped one. Moats were an important part of warfare, and unless it was filled with water with a tall wall backing the defender side with overhangs so they could shoot into the moat. All other moats had a slant towards the attackers. This may seem counter intuitive at first, until you imagine archers and spearmen standing on the top of the opposite side as you have to run down hill and then climb up the opposite side instead of just bridging the gap.

PS: the reason trenches were made square was because of arial bombardments that didn't give a da** what side you were on -_- they weren't moats, they were places to hide from explosions and gun fire.
