In this case the MC isn’t just making a small decision differently — he’s much stronger than he originally was at that same point in time. If the tower trial adjusts based on the person taking it, then the conditions are completely different from the start.
And let's be honest, in many of those "tower trial" part stories, there are always some magical conditions or hidden mechanics that trigger when certain requirements are met. It basically gives the author a way to make things play out differently for the MC and create special events for him.
