The abuser may hurt or mistreat them at times and then act loving or kind afterward, which can make the victim hold onto the hope that things will eventually get better.
The term “trauma bonding” has caused a lot of people to misunderstand what it actually means, but that’s not what it refers to. What people usually call “Stockholm syndrome” is actually closer to what trauma bonding means.
