I know ppl will disagree with my take but I think that the reason Mathias want her rears is bcs he knows he will never get those bright smiles full of happiness that she gives to others such as he r uncle or Kyle so he thinks he wants her tears but he realises that he wants them for himself not for others that's why he was shocked

He's extremely emotionally repressed and doesn't understand how to process or identify what he feels. He makes her cry because that's all he knows and all he thinks he can get and he wants it for him and him alone. Very much an extreme version of a child pulling on their crush's pigtails for attention, he needs a therapist like yesterday.
