It's clear that the mother want to marry off Karhan for money and since Ilya has more money than the other, it will not be long that the mother changes fiancée (I don't think she cares about who marries her son, but how much of money she will get) Makes me wonder how come a duke needs to marry for money, usually it's for political power. Once again, we need to band together to protect Karhan!
@Marioleen Usually money comes hand-in-hand with political power; Espically in the world they've set up. Everyone adores Bloden because of their money, meaning the power they have is most likely greater.

@Polarity true, everyone wants Ilya for her money, like her ex, but it's implied that money can't buy status and rank and those hold a lot of power. The Bloden Family is richer than most, probably the richest in the kingdom, but they don't have a lot of political status, since Ilya was worried about the problems her ex's family could bring to her family due to her break up since they are a rank above the Bloden. He**, what was going to be her father-in-law is bullying her brother in retaliation and warning, so I'm actually curious about the Duke family and why they need Karhan to marry someone rich. The same goes for the ex's family. They were overjoyed when they realized that Ilya was so rich, and they don't want to lose such a prize. So, what is going on economically that these prestigious family are out for more money?
