@yutomax DxD, Shinmai Maou, Fate seriee and Sora no otoshimono don't have spineless MCs. Heck Fate series is mostly about fighting and most of these mangas, specially Sora no otoshimono shone because of their author's talent. Sekirei was meiocre and can be said as a failure of a harem because the emphasis was clearly on the Miko dressed girl. DxD has similar problem but it wasn't as bad and the MC was interesting.
But the rest you mentioned are 'successful' cause the audience was no different from po** addicts. All these mangas had to show for was bobas and more girls. To love-ru was no different from a kid's po**. I stopped reading Maken-ki midway so can't comment on that.
