Unless the world they were living in was truly a kind world, the moment any information leaked about the world trees powers you know the aristocracy was going to get involved as they would not just protect the tree but try to monopolize it as well.
Or worse knowing human nature, a war would've been fought over the possession of the tree.
Alto's village would probably not have talked about it or travelers who heard the story would probably pass it off as a tall tale. Monsters who ate the fruit would probably not talk about it either. But for the merchant and his private army that protects the tree, that's going to get someones attention.
