After Riftan left the tent that had Maxi, he stays by the tent outside. Hebaron comes to ask after Maxi and tries to tell Riftan to go with Maxi to the capital and that he can handle the straddlers (monsters). Riftan then tell him that they should leave immediately. When Hebaron tries again, Riftan cuts him off and walks to Talon (his warhorse), mounts the beast and goes away. He was still moping, internally, over the fact that he had made Maxi his wife and, in so doing, had only brought misfortune to her which he had always "carried" with him. Riftan really didn't see her off to the capital. Not a glance, not a moment on a hill looking at her carriage go. Just nothing. That's the sad truth of this brief separation. It was a necessary evil.
