Most famous Alexander the great went on campaign 10 years straight!!! Rome conquering vast land and nations each genaeration... china and india respectively... genghis Khan and his descendands... Aswell last but enorm Europe many colonies!!!
So let me be honest... I would react the same as you! But if the region itself were not stable itself (all time skirmishes)... there could be no union to begin with... secondly if the empire had overwhelming power... than surrounding countries felt despair with morale shattered army crumbling easily!!
