Well historically no matter what your faith, if your religion accepts money it probably has been invovled in some form of corruption. Think of it this way you have two priests one is good and will spend his time taking care of the needy, looking after the poor and generally being a great role model of the his.
Then you have the second priest he joined for power and money he spends most of his time using his relegion to encourage others to sacrafice money and time to his cause.
This guy will work to get people to spend more money on the temple, the vestments/robes, he stages more pagentry, invests his money in songs, and literature etc. He is glamorous and pretty. Second priest says he is spending the money on the poor and down trodden but you don't have to be around the poor and down trodden. Second priest's way seems more convenent for you to drop money in the collection plate and go home to your nice warm house.
The first priest is like, "Hey you need to come serve food to the poor and you need to give your time and no I am not going to build you a fancy house to worship in that's money that could feed so many people."
Think about which is more appealing to the average person. It isn't hard to figure out which priest will have more outward success and influence on the community. Even if they are from the same faith the second priest will have more people follow him the then the first. So even when trying to judge results despite the first priest having more sincere followers he can't win in terms of numbers and money.
